- DIED. Robert Noyce, 62, co-inventor of the integrated
- circuit and a founder of Intel Corp., whose microprocessors
- dominate the personal-computer industry; of a heart attack; in
- Austin. Noyce's microchips permitted an electronic
- miniaturization that, in addition to personal computers, led
- to such commonplace wonders as pocket calculators, video games
- and antilock brakes. After a 32-year career pioneering the
- development of California's Silicon Valley, Noyce moved in 1988
- to Austin to head Sematech, a government and industry research
- consortium working to keep the U.S. apace with Japan in
- semiconductor manufacturing technology.
